Written by Keys and Kerry Brothers, Jr., the song was released in June 2004 as the third single from Keys second studio album, The Diary of Alicia Keys (2003). It was nominated for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the 2005 Grammy Awards. At one time, "Diary" had been released as a double A-side with "If I Aint Got You". The songs Hani remixes gave Keys her first—and so far only—chart-topper on the Hot Dance Club Play in late 2004.
